Paint supplies
Oil paint supplies are not cheap. For a starving artist, this is a
cruel fact. However, an artist who does not have a lot of money can
save some by being creative with the purchase and use of paint.
Some of the ways a person can save money on oil paint supplies include:
• Second is number one – Look for secondhand supplies first.
A person can often find frames or oil paintings at second hand stores
or yard sales. Very often the frames are nice and can be used for other
projects. An old frame can be painted or sanded in order to look like
new.
An old canvas can be recycled using paint thinner to flatten paint that
was previously applied. After this has dried, re-cover the canvas with
two or three coats of gesso and move on.
• Goodbye canvas – Although a canvas is the traditional
background for oil painting, the fact is that it does not have to be.
Painters are famous for thinking outside of the box. This is also true
of the paint supplies they choose to use. A person could use plywood
or hardwood to paint on. This is certainly much less expensive than
canvas.
However, if a person uses one of these substances, he or she should
remember to sand it and prime it before applying paint.
A person who thinks outside of the box when it comes to buying oil paint
supplies is likely to be able to save money, and still create quality
artwork.
